Here's a quick recap: A few weeks ago, it was leaked that runDisney would be adding not just a new 10K to the Disney World Marathon Weekend, but also combining the 5K, 10K, Half and Full Marathons into a new challenge, which at the same time recognizes the Dopey Challenge runDisney fans have long pined for.
So, registration for the Weekend officially opens next week at noon on April 9, but, there are a few ways you may be able to score early entry. And if you're one of the people who had the unfortunate luck of being blocked out of the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend or the Dumbo Challenge, then you'll want to read this.
Runner's World Challenge
The first option opens today at noon. Once again this year, runDisney is teaming with Runner's World to bring the Runner's World Challenge back for second year. Those willing to spend a bit of a premium for their race weekend will have the opportunity to start registering for the Dopey today at noon. Now, it's not cheap, but, you do get a lot for your money. Here's a look at the pricing:
Seems like a lot, right? But, take a look at what's included first:
That's no joke, you get a lot for your money. Just the entry to the Pasta in the Park Party and the Race Retreat for each race up to and over $200 more per person. It does work out to be a good deal.
Some things did change from last year's Runner's World Challenge. For instance, this year there is no option to book a hotel as part of your registration, which also eliminated the possibility for a private bus over to the race in the morning. That private bus alone and the worries it would eliminate could prove invaluable for a lot of runners!
If you want to register for the Runner's World Challenge, you can go here starting today.
If the Runner's World Challenge is a little out of your price range, you're not out of luck for early registration possibilities.
These are rumored, as nothing has been concretely written in stone by runDisney, so just be careful of this.
Last year, one week before registration opened for the 20th Anniversary of Marathon Weekend, a surprise email went out to Disney Visa cardholders letting them know they could register early and receive $15 off the Half and Full Marathon registrations and $30 off the Goofy Challenge. Needless to say, I jump all over that email.
The rumor is that a similar email will be going out for Disney Visa cardholders once again. According to an email received by someone in the Team #runDisney group from runDisney, it is expected that the email will be sent out on April 3, and there were no details as to whether a discount would once again be offered.
It's anyone's guess if another surprise email will be sent this year or not. Disney Visa holders were treated to early registration for the Dumbo Double Dare, but not at a discount. So if you have a Disney Visa, keep watching your email, or looking on the Disney Visa member rewards page. Or if you don't have a Disney Visa and want to apply, you can go here.
The points you can accrue with this card are a fantastic way to help pay for the trip you'll be taking as part of the Marathon Weekend experience. I highly recommend the Premier card. It has a $50 annual fee, but you get double points when you use the card for things like groceries and gas. They add up really fast!
Earlier today the email for Disney Visa cardholders went out. The discount gives $15 off for any of the races that you want to register for. Unlike previous years, the discount is not a collective discount, meaning that if you register for the Dopey Challenge, you'll still only get $15 off. But, it still helps cut down on at least the Active.com fees that everyone loves so much.
To register using the Disney Visa discount, just go to this link and when you checkout, enter in the first four digits of your credit card to receive your discount.
Disney Vacation Club & Disney Annual Passholders
The word on the street is that both DVC members and Annual Passholders will have early registration access that could possibly include a small discount.
The link for the DVC Member discount has already been posted. You can go here starting April 3 to register, and receive $10 off for any of the races using the code DVCRUNDISNEY.
The link for the Annual Passholders has been added as well. Simply go here to register.
Given how fast the Dumbo Double Dare and Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend sold out, if you want to participate in the 2014 Disney World Marathon Weekend, especially in the 10K or the Dopey Challenge, getting in early is your best bet.
If you don't have one of these options for early registration, be ready before noon on April 9 and have the runDisney website or Active.com website ready to go to register.
Will you be registering for any of the events for the 2014 Marathon Weekend?
